Answer
This is a question I have been asked hundreds of times. Many of the clients that have come to me to obtain a loan have done so just for this purpose. There are a couple of different options that I suggest.
If you are in dire need of furniture for a short period of time, you can consider renting. This is a short term fix, but will allow you to accomplish what you need to.
If you are looking for a long term solution or do not have the money to rent the furniture, you have three options.
Firstly, if you currently own your property you could consider taking out a subprime second loan ( A second lien secured by your property). Depending on your situation and the price of the furniture you are look to purchase, this may be a viable option. Many subprime seconds or home equity loans have substantially lower costs involved than taking out a subprime first mortgage (Approximately $1000-$2000). If your furniture is expensive or you are purchasing a large amount, this may be an option. If the costs associated by taking out the loan are more than the furniture you are looking to buy, or even half, do NOT use this option.
Secondly, you can shop around you local stores or online for merchants that have in house financing for people in poor credit situations. In house financing tends to be more lenient, but the interest rates will definitely be higher. (Remember, furniture is heavy, so shipping charges could be outrageous!)
Lastly, you could contact a local "Hard Money" lender. This should be consider as a last resort option and should be avoided at all costs. The expense involved in taking out a hard money loan is ridiculous. You will more than likely be paying huge interest rates as high as 20%-30%!
